Complex transitions from baseball to softball with Portolite mounds

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Four months. 10 diamonds. Nearly 3,000 games. Nothing Portolite game mounds can’t handle, according to Zach Smith, recreation complex supervisor for the City of Council Bluffs Parks Division in western Iowa.

Zach’s facility sees weekends packed with youth tournaments, April to July, drawing leagues from nearby Omaha and other communities.

The one thing he and his team don’t see much of is time between games. They get roughly 30 minutes max for field prep before the next teams take position.

“The game mounds have a really lightweight design,” said Zach. “It takes only one or two staff members to adjust the mounds between games and move them off the field for storage once tournaments end.

That allows us to focus on prepping the rest of the field and keeps tournaments moving along—for the players and the parents.”

According to Zach, there’s an added bonus to Portolite mounds. During the season, every Sunday evening, fields transition from youth baseball to adult softball. That means an additional 12 to 15 softball games on some fields.

Portolite games mounds have a hollow cavity underneath, which enables Zach and his staff to set and protect pitching rubbers for the softball games in advance.

Once baseball tournaments come to a close, the mounds are easily moved off the fields, and softball games get under way immediately.

In addition to the recreation complex, Zach also manages six other diamonds in parks throughout the city. Zach has 17 Portolite 6” game mounds in use total.

“I’m entering my 13th season in this industry,” Zach said. “I have experience with a number of different game mounds.”

“Portolite has a good thing going here. These mounds are durable, lightweight, and they allow my staff and I to optimize what little time we have between games.”

“With the level of activity we see at this facility, efficiency is critical. Portolite just gets it.”
